SQ3R Reading Strategy

The SQ3R method is a reading comprehension strategy that helps students effectively understand and retain information from texts. It consists of five steps: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review.

1. Survey

Before reading, take a few minutes to glance over the material. Look at headings, subheadings, images, and summaries to get a general idea of the content.

2. Question

Turn headings and subheadings into questions. This engages your mind and prepares you to actively seek answers while reading.

3. Read

Read the text carefully while keeping your questions in mind. Look for answers and take notes on key points.

4. Recite

Summarize what you've read in your own words. Answer the questions you formed earlier without looking at the text.

5. Review

Go over the material again to reinforce understanding. Re-read notes and test yourself on key concepts.
